A amazing story well written and well researched for details of this expedition. Found it a very interesting read. Would give it five stars except for the author didn't show where in Siberia the many not famliar names of villages, outposts and harbors were located in relation to their travels overland or out to sea very well on any maps. Would have been nice to have a general idea of that.

Eye-opening coverage of an amazing bit of exploration history, about which I'd heard nothing before reading this. (Bonus: For those of us west of the Rockies, this story explains the origins of a striking local bird's name, the "Steller's Jay".)

I would give this 5 stars, but the paperback copy that I purchased from Amazon "used," is an "Advance Reading Copy - Not for Sale" and has no very badly needed maps. My edition also needs to be edited. I understand there are maps in the final edition and I may purchase that for my library to share with family and friends. It's a terrific, well-written story that I knew little about and reads almost like a novel. The drive, sacrifice, and accomplishments of these men and the hardships they endured are inspiring.

Picked this up because I knew very little about this great Bering expedition. Some story, and I learned a lot of things I did not knowabout this period and this area. So much goes wrong that it becomes a little depressing at times, but there is also great accomplishment and character and the book is well worth the time.
