I have enjoyed seeing Alan's appearances on Luke Serveld's "Meet The Gaffer" episodes. Alan clearly knows his stuff, and this book is an excellent resource for gaffers and camera ops who want to develop strong lighting skills. Lots of detailed diagrams and example photos illustrate the challenges and Alan's solutions for effective lighting. The writing style is great, with bits of humor and sage wisdom along the way. Highly recommended!

I've bought tons of gaffing, lighting, and cinematography books in the past. I've read the "Classic" books: "The 5 C's", "Film Lighting", Blain Brown's books but a lot of them talk about theories, film cameras and lighting with gigantic Mole-Richardson lights.This book perfectly describes how to light and shoot for modern, commercial video projects with smaller crews and LED lighting packages. Very hands-on, very practical, very straightforward. This is the book I wish I had when I was first starting out as a young cinematographer.

Alan Steinheimer’s Shaping Light for Video in the Age of LEDs is a great combination of theory and practical knowledge. He incorporates the recent technology changes of LED usage but still covers the legacy world of tungsten lighting that is still in use. Alan outlines a methodical breakdown of lighting with practical hands-on solutions to everyday problems. The Dummies-style format is easy to read and chapters are kept to digestible chunks. The many pages of the glossary are a great introduction for new students to the world of lighting. This is a very useful, practical book for videography students and experienced pros as well.

I have read several books on this topic, and while the premise is really exciting, as indeed few cover LEDs, the execution isn’t quite there. I got through this book in about an hour and most of it is geared towards equipment you’d use on a fairly robust commercial shoot. If you’re interested in this, I’d check out “Lighting for Cinematography” by Kevin Landau instead. Great reference setups in here, but again, if you’re trying to use the Robert Rodriquez school of filmmaking and keep things simple, this isn’t for you.

This book is great for the person who is starting out in this new age of LED work flows. It is also perfect for us old timers who don't always have access to some of the tools available in larger markets. The information will quickly become one of the go to books for knowledge on Gaffing and overall lighting approaches to film projects. The information outlined in this book is long over due and fills a void where many other lighting books fall short. I would advise any person who works in the film industry to consider this as part of their continuing education.

Alan Steinhiemer's 30 years of lighting experience is smartly presented in this book. It's easy to follow and wholly practical. If you're just starting out, you'll want this book for the technical information it provides, especially since LEDs are fast becoming the norm (and chances are you bought a couple yourself for your indy). If you're already in the biz, you'll definitely find something here to up your game. And if you're as salty as Steinheimer himself, you'll appreciate his perspective on the ever-changing world of lighting. What I enjoyed most from this read is Steinheimer's candor on the business end of gaffing. This book is more than a technical manual — it's a helpful, straightforward guide from a production-hardened pro who has slugged it out for the last 30 years. And he presents it all in its beautiful and sometimes messy glory. From gaffers to grips, and PAs to producers, I recommend this book. You'll walk away smarter with more than a couple tricks up your sleeve for your next gig and a greater appreciation for the art and business of lighitng.
