Absolutely loved it. It was arranged by episode, that I could skip any episode that I couldn't remember well or was not interested in. At first you may find it jarring that the episodes were arranged in alphabetical order rather than chronological order, but think about it- most people, including me, don't really remember the names of most of the episodes. So to the average reader, the order seemed random. The chronological order gets tedious in books like these, and I could pretend it was just jumping around. My favorite episode is/was "The Devil and Peter Tork", and I was pleased to find the author agreed with me. But she was able to put why this episode was so great into word in a way that I never could. Also, she pointed out something that had been bothering me for decades about the episode "Some Like it Lukewarm." As a little girl, I deeply resented that the female band in the contest was a legitimate band who could play their own instruments (though the song they performed in the auditions was a bit demeaning). The solution at the end of the show- combine the bands! But why were the girls relegated to being go-go dancers while the boys sang and played instruments? Ugh. I'm so happy I wasn't alone in disliking this part.Great book.

What is MONKEE MAGIC? If you ever wanted to find out this is the book for YOU! Described on the cover as "a book about a TV show about a band", this volume is exactly that. Melanie Mitchell, an admitted late bloomer to The Monkee phenomenon, has structured one of the most entertaining and informative sources of information concerning every Monkee TV episode as well as the movie "Head" and the television special "33 1/3 Revolutions per Monkee". Melanie's critiques cover certain criteria for each subject, such as nitpicks, gag highlights, breaking the fourth wall and even (I chuckle every time I read this one) what snack to eat while watching the shows. There are her own opinions of the episodes and they are graded at the end. She can be tough (see the review of the pilot) and the reader may not always agree with the analysis but you can't escape the honesty and humor that engulfs each review. She also has separate chapters dedicated to adult characters, the ladies of the series, the music, etc., all adding new and fresh insights. The format makes it a very easy read. My only regret is that I did not grab this up 5 years ago when it was published. Recently I started rewatching the series again on Blu Ray and am playing catch up now. While I had seen the book on Amazon before I somehow skipped past it. Bad call, that. BUY THIS BOOK and start watching The Monkees again. You might just have a little more fun this time around!

I just finished reading this and I really have to say that I enjoyed every bit of it. I laughed, I cried... Well I mostly laughed. Her descriptions of the episodes were so accurate and they captured the episodes perfectly from a critical fan's view point. She pointed out certain things that I never noticed before as well as things that I've wondered myself. I found myself tearing up near the end, not just because the book was almost over but because of her tender way of including the death of Davy Jones. For a book about a TV show, she did a great job at telling the stories ass well as tying up loose ends by including her reviews of Head and the two specials that aired, as well as mentioning the continuing careers of the members of The Monkees. I highly recommended this book as an entertaining companion to the show as well as a stand alone book for fans. Also, one last side note, the cover art is adorable and perfect for the book. Cudos to the amazing artist and mad cudos to the author.

Monkee Magic reads less like "a book about a TV show about a band", and more like a conversation with a good friend over a cup of coffee. There are numerous times I found myself responding to her observations out loud, as if she was next to me (and with Monkee Magic, perhaps that cafe were were sitting in WAS real? :) ). The episodes are presented in a format I didn't expect--alphabetical by show title, which is a feat in an of itself, as many shows had multiple titles. At first it was a "nitpick", as it often jumbled episodes within and across seasons, but quickly turned into an "absolutely not a nitpick", as it let the Monkee Magic flow. The Monkees was not a show that required continuity, so analyzing it outside the confines of airing or filming order kept with the magic of the series. Not to worry, if you do like things nice and tidy, she painstakenly cross-references information from running gags, returning actors, and recurring themes. My biggest compliment I can give the author is how much she loves her subject, and yet keeps a realistic check on it (she does chide them on some points, like stereotypes, lazy writing, poor plots). She is one of the wittiest writers I've come across who not only entertained me but educated me on a subject I thought I was an expert on (or so I thought). But she also leaves open things she wants to know more about herself and has a section for her own questions to the reader. I plan on rewatching the show now in her format and see what Monkee Magic I can conjure. Overall, I give her an A+.
