I like more recipes in this book than her original Mediterranean Diet Cookbook. I will add that I had a question about substituting fresh tomatoes for canned tomatoes due to allergies and Ms. Jenkins responded quickly with good suggestions.

Bought the original version around 10 years ago and loved it. Mainly, I used it as just a recipe resource, but not as a lifestyle. Recently my wife and I decided to lose weight and the concept of the Mediterranean Diet really struck home. By limiting our portion sizes, we have found we can eat the most wonderful food and still lose weight, too.I bought this version because I lent my original copy and it was never returned! Nancy Harmon Jenkins has made significant changes, but what I like the most about this book is the local insight for each recipe. It appears that Nancy has lived all around the Mediterranean Sea and has local knowledge for each recipe. In the 1.5 months we have been eating Mediterranean, the quality of our meals has vastly improved and our weight lose journey has continued successfully. Furthermore we both feel that this is a lifestyle we can continue for the rest of our lives. THE NEW MEDITERRANEAN DIET COOKBOOK is the basis for our new way of eating everyday.

I have made 10-15 recipes out of this book, which is a lot for me from one book, and not a single one was a miss. Instead, every one was outstanding. Truly outstanding. Like the perfect version of everything you've loved and tried. Some ones I cannot be without: Harira, Greek salad, Egyptian lentil soup. It's unfortunate that this is labeled as a "diet" book. It's not a diet book in that sense -- it's a book with amazing recipes from the Mediterranean that happen to be good for you. I cannot recommend it highly enough and I bought it 6 years ago. My shelf is *filled* with cookbooks. This is one I use again and again.

If you are anything like me, you are going to be spending so much time flipping back to the glossary of this book that the kindle edition is a pain. This book spends a great deal of time describing the philosophy of the diet, not recipes or actual implantation as well as the author's opinions and those of an organization whose entire purpose is to sell olive oil. According to my kindle I'm 10% of the way into the book and have yet to encounter a single recipe. The Kindle edition is non-refundable and I would likely be far less irritated with the author's long-winded and repetitive prose if I had easier access to the glossary or could just flip pages until I found a recipe. If you are looking for a simple recipe book, this is not it.

One of the best cookbooks I've ever bought. I don't know if it has a bad recipe. Super tasty and healthy. Some of the recipes are a lot of work, but not all of them.

I have experimented with many different cuisines and cookbooks from various diets and countries, and after a few years I've finally settled on this. In truth, it says Mediterranean Diet but it could just as easily say Mediterranean Cookbook, because the emphasis is on the meals as a whole, not some dietary progression plan meant to correspond to some companies exercise regimen. There are no calorie counters or nutrition displays because if you do everything right by eating these recipes, the information just gets in the way and you lose focus on what the point of eating this diet is about.Firstly, there is no breakfast in the traditional sense. This lifestyle like manual for mediterranean culture addresses many points about how and what we eat and how to do them differently, starting with breakfast. Indeed there are cookbooks that feature many middle eastern and greek varieties of what we call breakfast foods, but these are hard pressed to be strictly breakfast like in western society. The main focus is on vegetable based meals prepared as soups, salads, stews, etc. and less on presentation recipes with meat and expensive eye candy which is not what mediterranean food is designed. In fact, there are no pictures in this book, which is one of the reasons why I'm giving it 4 stars, but also after a few weeks of steady cooking from this book, you can easily make anything presentable for guests with some simple technique.I also happen to live close to a middle eastern community, so access to some of these 'special' ingredients like Harissa and lamb comes easy for me, but it may not for you. Another major factor in these recipes are the home-cooked approach to meals. What I mean by this is that there is no sense of waste in most of the meals, as most of the ingredients are the same from recipe to recipe. You will use a whole onion, a whole potato, a whole carrot. Not some 1/3 onion and 1/4 of another kind of onion as some recipe books call for, leaving you with a chunk of ingredient you can't save or use readily for something else. Everything connects well with other recipes, so some leftover carrots and celery can be used for a soup or something to accompany the meal and whatever you make can be stored for some time.If I was some kid picking up this book I would be immediately intimidated due to the boringness of the pages and text reading so stale. Also the ingredient list per recipe can be long ranging from 7 or 8 ingredients to 15 or more. Inexperienced cooks may see this as a huge shopping list and expensive bill, but take notice that much of the ingredients are spices, herbs and other things that come plentiful and per recipe comes under $5 a meal. The time and prep work is probably the biggest challenge to cooking the mediterranean way, it never seems to get easier, but the benefits outweigh the cost in this case.In short, I am a mediterranean cuisine convert and this book is my kitchen staple. There are many others like this that follow even more traditional approaches, but living in the United States with limited time and ingredient resources for cooking/eating healthy, I am hard pressed to find a better daily cookbook.

Great food, easy recipes, and love the descriptions and history of the dishes. Was a little surprised that there are no pictures, but I ended up getting over that pretty fast once I realized how much I liked the book. Just would have been good to know.

Over the past four months, this has absolutely become my favorite cookbook. There are all types of recipes -- fish, meat, soups, pastas, veggies, appetizers, and desserts. For the most part, the recipes are not difficult to make. They may be time consuming, but the recipes are simply written and easy to understand and follow. The results are delicious -- fresh, flavorful, and abundant (we always have lots of leftovers.)I'm working my way throughout the entire cookbook, cooking 4 to 5 recipes out of it each week. I'm also blogging about the whole thing (with pictures, which unfortunately the book itself doesn't have). Google "GoodbyeButter" on blogspot to find my photos.Buy this book and you'll be cooking healthy and delicious meals in no time.
