This book was given to me as a gift by a friend. I dove in eagerly, as key areas of my interests include somatic awareness, trauma, empathic transmission and psychology. I couldn’t get past the first 3 pages of the introduction, and after 10 pages of the first chapter I just gave up on the book altogether. Life is too short to spend on bad literature. I’m really not sure what succinct message the author is trying to convey, or more importantly, how this message could be useful and applied to professionals and their patients. The prose is lengthy and obtuse, and the author’s voice comes across as self-aggrandizing and tired, like a re-hashing of old psychoanalytic concepts without anything deeply new or profound. The inner jacket cover is the best written portion. My friend, who also bought the book for herself, gave it even less time, and we both arrived to the same conclusion: not worth the time or the money.

Speaking as a psychoanalyst myself, I really enjoyed this book. Webster's prose seems to mirror the psychoanalytic process itself. She leads us through a landscape of theory, clinical practice and personal experience, a mix exceedlingly rare and difficult to impart. The book unfolds the way an analysis unfolds, with moments of contemplation, inspiration and "Aha!" along the way. I learned a lot from this text and appreciate Webster's writing style and point of view. Unique, captivating and clearly well-learned, Webster is one of contemporary psychoanalysis' rising stars. Her voice is sure to be heard for decades to come. I also thoroughly enjoyed her first book "The Life and Death of Psychoanalysis" - be sure to check out both!

Conversion Disorder by Jamieson Webster is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late November.The lost art of psychoanalysis, according to Webster (themselves a psychoanalyst), that kind of puts psychology and mental health counseling under a stereotyped scrutiny while taking a multilayered (mostly philosophical, Lacan, and Freudian) look at, as the title suggests, conversion disorder. At its simplest, it's a feeling of hysteria towards feeling out of place in one’s own body. The format is loosely arranged, soapbox-like, and has notedly deep, defensive paragraphs about whatever the author chooses to address, rather like they’re being prompted by an interviewer invisible to the reader.

This new book confirms that Jamieson Webster is one of the most original psychoanalytic thinkers today. Her prose is luminous and will appeal to the professional as well as to any person who enjoys a good read. Webster's wealth of ideas makes the book a treat of original insights. Her points are nestled within others like Russian dolls. The result is poetic and illuminating. She will convert you.
